How to be an independent and confident Latino
If you want to have more confidence, you must also be independent. After all, self-confidence is about having faith in your own ability and in your own decisions. If you don’t know how to be alone or don’t feel like you can do things without the help of others, then you can’t have real confidence.
Take the example of Latino people and the Hispanic community in general. We are people who have that need to be independent, to fight for ourselves and our families.
One of the challenges that some of us struggle with is being alone or doing things for ourselves. Part of this can be the result of a lack of practice. If you go directly from living with your parents to living with a partner, then you may have never really experienced what it is to fend for yourself. And living with friends is not very different.
In the same way, some Latinos will spend all their free time with others, to the point that we do not have much independence or purpose seemingly when we are under our own means. If it makes you nervous thinking that you can’t stand the idea of spending a night alone, you are not alone in this struggle! You might need a quick independence boost. How do we Latinos get that little kick we need sometimes?
Practice
The first step to being a more independent Latino, and almost anything really, is your mindset. Aside from the way you think, you also need to practice.
One of the best ways to achieve this is to start at the bottom, so to speak. That means packing a suitcase and taking a trip for a couple of weeks. The more adventure you have, the better. So that could mean going backpacking and talking to strangers, or it could mean traveling to a place where nobody speaks your language. Many of the older Latinos already experienced this when we came to the U.S., however, the younger generation has mostly been given everything, which is not always a good thing.
You may be surprised at what you are capable of when you use your own creativity, resources and just learn to get out in the world and experience it as much as you can! Latinos are very strong-willed and like to things solo when we have to.
Another way to practice being independent is to avoid the temptation to ask for help the next time something goes wrong. Has the toilet stopped flushing? Do you have a hole in the wall that looks bad and letting bad smells in the house? Instead of asking anyone for help, open YouTube and try to fix it yourself. This is very enriching and can do wonders for your self-esteem.
Find your identity
Simply spending a little time alone is also a good idea. Even if you live with a partner, try to spend a separate time just to pursue your own interests.
Latinos have many interests and hobbies. Finding a hobby is actually one of the most important things you can do to boost your independence since this way you always will have something to entertain your thoughts.

Tomemos el ejemplo de los latinos y la comunidad hispana en general. Somos personas que tienen la necesidad de ser independientes, de luchar por nosotros mismos y nuestras familias.
Uno de los desafíos con los que algunos de nosotros luchamos, es estar solos o hacer cosas por nosotros mismos. Parte de esto puede ser el resultado de una falta de práctica. Si pasas directamente de vivir con tus padres a vivir con una pareja, entonces es posible que nunca hayas experimentado realmente lo que es defenderte. Y vivir con amigos no es muy diferente.
De la misma manera, algunos latinos pasarán todo su tiempo libre con otros, hasta el punto de que aparentemente no tenemos mucha independencia o propósito cuando estamos bajo nuestros propios medios. Si te pone nervioso pensar que no puedes soportar la idea de pasar una noche solo, ¡no estás solo en esta lucha! Es posible que necesites un rápido impulso de independencia. ¿Cómo conseguimos los latinos ese impulso que a veces necesitamos?
Práctica
El primer paso para ser un latino más independiente, y casi cualquier, es su mentalidad. Aparte de su forma de pensar, también necesita practicar.
Una de las mejores maneras de lograr esto es comenzar desde abajo, por así decirlo. Eso significa empacar una maleta y hacer un viaje por un par de semanas. Cuanta más aventura tengas, mejor. Eso podría significar ir de mochilero y hablar con extraños, o podría significar viajar a un lugar donde nadie hable su idioma. Muchos de los latinos mayores ya experimentaron esto cuando llegamos a los EE. UU., Sin embargo, a la generación más joven se le ha dado todo, lo que no siempre es bueno.
¡Te sorprenderás de lo que eres capaz cuando utilizas tu propia creatividad, recursos y simplemente aprendes a salir al mundo y experimentarlo tanto como puedas! Los latinos tienen una voluntad muy fuerte y les gusta hacer cosas solos cuando tienen que hacerlo.
Otra forma de practicar la independencia es evitar la tentación de pedir ayuda la próxima vez que algo salga mal. ¿El inodoro ha dejado de descargar? ¿Tienes un agujero en la pared que se ve mal y deja malos olores en la casa? En lugar de pedir ayuda a nadie, abra YouTube e intente solucionarlo usted mismo. Esto es muy enriquecedor y puede hacer maravillas por su autoestima.
Encuentra tu identidad
Simplemente pasar un poco de tiempo solo también es una buena idea. Incluso si vives con un compañero, trata de pasar un tiempo separado solo para perseguir tus propios intereses.
Los latinos tienen muchos intereses y pasatiempos. Encontrar un pasatiempo es en realidad una de las cosas más importantes que puede hacer para impulsar su independencia, ya que de esta manera siempre tendrá algo para entretener sus pensamientos.
